Being a State with coal as a major industry, West Virginia has had many mine disasters. Some of them have sparked legislation for mine safety.

Shinnston celebrates 4th of July on the 1st!! Come to the Independence Concert in the new Performance Center.
Shinnston, West Virginia begins their celebration of Shinnston’s Christmas on the first Saturday in December. Activities take place all day, culminating with the Parade and the Shinnston Community Band Christmas Concert.
The Shinnston Independence Concert is rescheduled for July 2, 2012.
July 1, 2012 the Shinnston Community Band will perform the Anual Independence Concert at Ferguson Memorial Park.
Approximately 75 children came to Ferguson Park for the Easter Egg Gather April 7, 2012.
The Alumni of Shinnston High School (1910 – 1978) gather for a Homecoming every 4 years and 2012 is The Year! The schedule of activities has been announced.
