West Fork River Rail-Trail
This 17 mile scenic rail-trail is 50 feet from the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast. It winds along the West Fork River from Shinnston to Fairmont. 2 Bianchi 21-speed bicycles available for guests to use (donation to Lord's Pantry suggested for use of bicycles).
BL. Margaret of Castello Chapel of Perpetual Adoration
This Eucharistic Adoration and Prayer Chapel is the only chapel of its kind in West Virginia. Unique also is that rather than being only a Catholic or Shinnston chapel, the 24/7 vigil is kept by people of ALL faiths from all over the area and is visited by people of all faiths and religions. It is located 4 blocks from the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast.
Shinnston Veteran's Memorial
Lovely park honoring West Virginia Veterans. Created by volunteers, plaques honor Veterans from the Revolutionary War onward. Locator book for the plaques is found in the gazebo. A guest who works for the VA deemed it, "one of the prettiest Memorials I have seen".
Covered bridge at Philippi
Site of the first land battle of the Civil War, this bridge is part of US Rt. 250. Next to the bridge is a park with battle flags of the units involved in the battle, in then Philippi, Virginia. The Depot is a museum. This is one of 9 covered bridges near the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast.
Prickett's Fort
A 1774 reconstructed stockaded civilian fort on the original site is the center for 18th century frontier life. Costumed interpreters demonstrate crarfts and life on the frontier. For more information Prickett's Fort
Anna Jarvis House
Located in Webster (on the way to Phillipi) the restored house where Anna Jarvis, founder of Mother's Day was born. General George McClellan made his headquarters here during the Battle of Philippi. The rooms used as the General's headquarters were restored as his headquarters.
North Bend Rail-Trail
77 mile rail trail from Walker (near Parkersburg) to Wolf Summit (near Clarksburg). Wolf Summit is approx. 12 miles from Shinnston. The Friends of the North Bend Rail-Trail are (2006) in negotiations to bring it into Clarksburg.
Tygart Dam State Park
Near Grafton, park is site of the Tygart Dam. Hiking, fishing, boating.
Antique shops and glass outlets and factories
Many antique shops and glass factories/outlets are found in this area as well as craft shops.
Coal Country Miniature Golf
Located in Fairmont, Coal Country uses mine equipment for the holes and explains the use of that equipment at each hole.
Sunset-Ellis Drive-in Theater
2.6 miles south of the Gillum House is one of two drive-in theaters in the area. The Sunset-Ellis is open Friday thru Monday until Labor Day weekend.
